LUCHAWORLD MONTHLY INVADES YOUR HOUSE!

KRISZ’S NEWS & NOTES:

The month of May started off with CMLL’s Invasion angle continuing with the returns of Los Dinamitas (Mascara 2000 & Universo 2000) siding with the Independents. Mr. Aguila, Olimpico and Rayo De Jalisco Jr. also made their way back into CMLL. Mr. Aguila and Olimpico were part of the Invaders faction. However, Olimpico kissed the mat at Arena Mexico because he was so glad to be back (way to ruin the angle!). Rayo was brought in to side with CMLL. Later in the month, long-time AAA referee and one of Antonio Pena’s right-hand men in the promotion, Tirantes, joined the Invading group.

Jushin Thunder Liger won the CMLL Middleweight championship on May 3rd as he defeated Negro Casas at the New Japan PPV in Fukuoka.

Groon XXX suffered a serious knee injury on the May 2nd Perros del Mal PPV taping in Mexico City and according to Luchas 2000, there was talk that he may retire. The Perros Del Mal Promotion later informed the media that the injury wasn’t as serious as originally thought and that Groon XXX would have more details on the injury at a later time.

Super Porky suffered a dislocated mandible on the 5/9 Arena Coliseo show. Some thought he’d miss time, but the doctors reset it with their thumbs.

Black Warrior officially joined Los Perros Del Mal Promotion on May 18th.

Psicosis III gave an interview saying that he is the only true Psicosis right now because he is authorized by Nicho el Millionario to have the gimmick which the other Psicosis never got Nicho’s approval and was just put in the gimmick by Antonio Pena.

AAA has aligned with Fusion Universal de Lucha Libre to create a new championship called the AAA Parejas Increibles Tag Titles. The tournament will take place on 6/12 in Puebla and will feature all the big stars of AAA teaming up with their enemies.

May 24th KrisZ writes this detail in the lucha report:

L.A. Par-K supposedly hit a fan last night in Monterrey after an argument but there are no other real details out right now.

More on that in a bit!

demonperrromisticoThere was a press conference held (5/27) in Mexico City where it was announced that the yearly Lucha Libre Expo will take place from July 23-25 featuring participation from all the promotions to show the fans different styles of lucha libre. There was some fireworks going on between the wrestlers that were there with Silver King getting into it with IWRG boss Marco Antonio Moreno before calling out Blue Demon Jr. and getting kicked out all together, then you had Demon & Mistico having a verbal confrontation with Perro Aguayo Jr. putting his two cents in. Tickets went on sale also with the price being 150 pesos a piece and the schedules will be 12-9 on 7/23 & 7/24 and 11-8 on 7/25 and for that you will get to see over 300 wrestlers in matches, seminars, autograph signings, photo sessions, lucha training courses, musical groups, among other things. Plus there is talk that there may be a Hall of Fame ceremony as well.

El Supremo Passes Away (1942-2010)

ElsupremofaceEl Supremo aka Salvador Cuevas Ramirez who was a star in Mexico in the 70’s & 80’s died of cardiac arrest on May 4th in Tijuana at the age of 59. Supremo trained under the legendary Diablo Velasco and started out as Magnifico on 7/8/76 but soon changed his name to Supremo before finding success as a tag partner of Espectro Jr. until he made his big mark defeating Kato Kung Lee for the NWA Welterweight Title on 5/4/80 but he would only hold the title for a month before losing it to the legendary Lizmark on 6/6/80. Supremo kept plugging along and would defeat current EMLL Director Franco Columbo for the Mexican National Welterweight Title on 2/1/81 and held the title for 422 days before losing the title to Talisman on 3/30/82. Supremo continued being a top guy and was scheduled to have a big mask match against El Dorado on EMLL’s 52nd Anniversary Show on 9/20/85 but a big earthquake hit Mexico City the day before the show and the show was cancelled with Dorado later losing his mask to El Fantasma. Supremo would eventually have a tag partner in the early 90’s in Supremo II so Supremo could work a lighter schedule due to his age and some injuries before he would have a mask match on 12/8/92 at Arena Mexico against Pierroth who came out on top and Supremo had to reveal his identity. Supremo kept wrestling until 1995 where he would retire and moved back to Tijuana where he spent the rest of his days.

AAA TRIPLEMANIA XVIII MASSIVE REVIEW

AAA’s annual big event of the year and in the past 2 years they’ve gone the direction of having these shows air on Pay-Per-View in Mexico on a limited amount of satellite/cable systems. I don’t think that matters much given that AAA ends up airing the show at a later date for free on Televisa. Last year’s show aired several months later. THIS YEAR’S SHOW, you ask? First part of Triplemania aired in Mexico on June 20th. Granted the show has to be edited for Televisa (and later for Galavision here in the US) and they gotta add fart app commercials.

The most intriguing match from this show was the much-anticipated match-up between L.A. Park and La Parka (AAA). Some can argue that this match might have been 5-years too late due to a number of reasons including injuries, interest, and level of heat between the two wrestlers. In fact the best year to have probably done this would have been 2002 with La Parka (AAA) finally gaining some popularity and still was a capable wrestler and L.A. Park was hot off the heels of a really good feud with El Hijo del Santo and coming off his run in WCW. Did I mention these two guys hate each other?

For several years, earlier in the decade, whenever Televisa would do their sports awards and had one available for “Best Luchador”, they would always bring up the AAA version of La Parka and when speaking of his triumphs they’d mention some of L.A. Park’s own big wins (most notably his mask match victory against Pierroth) to pump up the AAA La Parka’s career resume. It always seemed to irk L.A. Park, who at one point did a couple of interviews about how much of a joke it was to see the AAA La Parka get the credit for things he did. L.A. Park was always the favorite of the die-hard lucha fans after years of building a reputation as one of the better workers in Mexico and due to his stint in WCW.

Meanwhile, La Parka (AAA) has had his share of detractors. It took him awhile to gain acceptance under that mask. He started under the La Parka gimmick as the “Junior” version back in November 1996. It was Antonio Peña’s way of having one of his more popular gimmick characters still available for shows as the original La Parka had made his way to WCW (brief stint in ECW). Several people to this day, *cough* Kris Zellner *cough*, refer to this La Parka as “La Parka Jr.”. In Mexico, some fans refer to him as La Parkaris, which is a combination of La Parka and Karis La Momia (his previous gimmick). La Parka (AAA) was never considered at the level of worker as the original, but the way Antonio Peña booked him over the years, he was able to gain some popularity with the casual fans and with kids. He did catch on to the dancing portion of the gimmick, which eventually came in handy in recent years. The last several years, La Parka (AAA) has been banged up from all the injuries he’s suffered over the years and coming back too soon from these injuries has made him even worst in the ring. He’s wrestled the last year or two with practically one good working arm.

This match alone would have made this Pay-Per-View worth watching even if you take everything about these two getting older and worn out. There was enough intrigue in this match that people would watch this show no matter the rest of the card.

However, during the week leading to Triplemania, there was an announcement by both AAA and Los Perros Del Mal about their own “invasion angle” going on. Of course, I don’t know if you can call it an invasion when one side, Los Perros Del Mal, holds a press conference notifying everyone they’re going to be at the show and also announced they would hold Perros Del Mal matches on AAA shows. Only a portion of the Perros Del Mal crew appeared as a lot of the guys had no intention of returning to AAA. While some people are excited because it means Hijo del Perro Aguayo will be back on their television sets, there probably going to hate the no-decision finishes that are likely going to be far more common now in AAA….Not that they didn’t do that already.

triplemaniaXVIII01AAA Triplemania XVIII 06/06 Palacio de los Deportes, DF:

Interesting intro to begin the show. Lots of images from wars and terrorism. Even a Hitler highlight. Then they get to a clip from “300″ movie. That leads to a bunch of highlights from previous Triplemanias. They then do a countdown with clips featuring some of the wrestlers appearing on the show.

AAA’s remained consistent in making Triplemania feel and come across bigger than any other show they do. I would say Triplemania is behind WWE, New Japan big shows (Wrestling World in Tokyo Dome), and the bigger Dragon Gate PPVs in Japan.

The edecanes carry the banner with Antonio Peña’s image and stop in front of his sister, Marisela Peña, who is still carrying the urn with Antonio Peña’s ashes.

1. Octagoncito b Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Charly Manson, Mascarita Divina, Mini Histeria, Mascarita Sagrada, La Parkita, Mini Chessman, Mini Psicosis [AAA MINI, Ladder]

Video package showing minis highlights. Where’d they get those? They still have minis matches on TV! LOL! I must miss them in between the Konnan, Dorian & Joaquin Roldan skits.:) Chessman first man introduced. Los Mini Vipers (Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Histeria, and Mini Psicosis) are next and they grab a ladder, chair and table and bring it ringside. La Parkita next. Followed by Mascarita Divina, Mini Charly Manson & Octagoncito. The AAA Minis title is suspended from that contraption coming down from the ceiling. Its a TLC match. Piero & Copetes Salazar are the referees.

Konnan joins the announce team as the match is in progress.

Match was pretty much a stunt show. I’m not a big fan of this sort of thing since its not really wrestling, to me at least. I think these guys would have had a much better match without having to use ladders, tables, and chairs. The bigger ladder seemed really flimsy and the two refs had to hold it every time someone would climb it. They also had a smaller ladder that they used to do spots off of and use to send each other crashing into each other. Bryan Alvarez would cringe at the unprotected chair shots in this match, but at least he’d get distracted by a likely concern when the minis climb the flimsy looking ladder. They sent out like 4-5 doctors late in the match. Security and one doctor carted off one of the mini Vipers.

One of the guys who dressed as a doctor also plays other roles for AAA. I think he’s one of the box y lucha commission guys. They also carted off Mini Abismo Negro on a stretcher.

2. Jennifer Blade, Rain, Sexy Star b Cinthia Moreno, Fabi Apache, Mari Apache [loser is a maid]

Video package highlighting this feud before the match begins.

Jennifer Blade and Rain enter waving American flags. Jennifer carries a broom and Rain a gift bag. Arturo Rivera calls them “Las Gringas Locas”. Sexy Star’s entrance includes her carrying a rainbow flag (maybe there was more to her previous choice of music!) and listening to her mp3 player. I bet its Aerosmith! Cinthia Moreno’s outfit looks like something you’d see in Hollywood late night. Las Apaches are last wearing their headdresses and the fans solidly behind them.

Jennifer_Blake

Weird start for the match with the tecnicas working more as rudas as they used double- and triple-team moves on the Foreign Legion women. I actually didn’t think this match was bad at all outside of the screwjob ending. They kept it short. The tecnicas got the bulk of the offense. Jennifer Blake did a good job selling during his portion of the match. I don’t think I can ever see La Reuca done in a match again after seeing it with Jennifer Blake! :) Hijo de Tirantes gets involved by doing slow counts for the tecnicas and then follows that up with pulling Mari Apache’s hair. Mari then clotheslines him and kicks him in the jewels. While Mari’s playing to the crowd, Jennifer Blake hits Mari with the broom and gets the pin.

Rain tells The Apaches & Cinthia Moreno that their “30 days start now bitch!” Sexy Star does the translating for her after for the fans. The tecnicas attack the Foreign Legion girls. El Gran Apache comes out and confronts El Hijo del Tirantes. Hijo del Tirantes acts bad ass to start his promo and as Gran Apache is going to attack him, he gets a little more cowardly. Konnan comes in and grabs Fabi by the hair and tells Gran Apache that the stips are still happening and ends with his “Arriba Cuba and down with Team Mexico”. It hasn’t been a good couple of weeks for Konnan in the sports department. Celtics lose to the mighty Lakers and Team Mexico wins a few games in the World Cup.

3. Silver King & Último Gladiador (Los Wagnermaniacos) b Atsushi Aoki & Go Shiozaki and James Storm & Robert Roode (Beer Money) and Joe Lider & Nicho el Millionario (La Hermandad 187) [AAA TAG]

Video package prior to this match as well. I think they used an instrumental version of “One” by Metallica.

Match had very little heat outside of La Hermandad 187 in the match and whenever they were confronting Konnan. Nicho was the standout of this match. Did well working with the NOAH guys, particularly Aoki, and with Beer Money. Aoki looked much better here than Go Shiozaki. 4-way kind of seemed to kill a lot of the momentum in this match since guys looked confused at times in the ring. Los Wagnermaniacos spent most of the match outside and of course they won! First team out was the defending champs, Aoki & Shiozaki. Pretty obvious this was NOAH’s way of correcting the schedule conflict for Ishimori, who was participating in New Japan’s Best of the Super Junior tournament. Next out were La Hermandad 187 by Beer Money. Konnan distracted Nicho & Lider from outside. Storm whacked Nicho over the back with a chair to eliminate them. Los Wagnermaniacos then pulled off the win for the belts.

After the match, the Junior Dinamitas (Mascara Ano Dos Mil Jr. & Hijo de Cien Caras) made their way to the ring to issue a challenge to the new tag champs, Silver Kain & Ultimo Gladiador (Los Wagnermaniacos). they brought up how Silver Kain made his way to Arena Naucalpan and now they were bringing the IWRG vs. AAA war to their turf.

4. Alex Koslov, Chessman, Hernandez b Heavy Metal, Octagón, Pimpinela Escarlata [seconds hair, cage]

Another video package highlighting Heavy Metal’s AAA return and why the wrestlers representing each side are involved in the match. Piero cutting promos about his team. Hijo de Tirantes training with the Foreign Legion members on his team.

AlexKoslov02Alex Koslov is the first to enter and AAA has some female fans throwing underwear at him. At least that’s what Rivera insinuates is what is being tossed at Koslov. Chessman next, followed by Hernandez with Hijo de Tirantes, who’s carrying in a chair. Pimpinela dances his way to the ring. Heavy Metal next up. Rarely used in CMLL and now working a stip match in AAA. He’s a better fit in AAA. Finally Octagon. The intros for this match took forever. Ten-Plus minutes that will of course be replaced by 10 minutes of commercials when airing on free tv.

Alex Koslov sings the Russian National Anthem before the match begins. He’s no Nikolai Volkoff. Pimpinela stops him by putting a g-string over his head. Koslov grabs it. Smells it. Realizes its Pimpi and the match begins. Early part of the match is just a Foreign Legion beatdown on the tecnicos. Heavy Metal and Pimpinela took the brunt of the bumps getting tossed around. Octagon just got punched, kicked, eye-gouged on one side of the cage. Pimpinela and Octagon turn the momentum to their favor and Octagon climbs to the top rope. He kicks away Chessman and Koslov. Hernandez tries to splash him, but Octagon moves and jumps over the cage. First man out, Octagon. Alex Koslov is the next man out. Pimpi tries to keep him in, but Koslov’s able to free himself from Pimpi’s grasp and jumps out of the cage. Pimpinela and Hernandez have a fun little exchange building on Pimpi trying and finally successfully kissing Hernandez. Hernandez sells like he just got kicked in the nuts. Pimpi climbs out, but Hijo de Tirantes tries to stop him. Pimpi kisses Hijo de Tirantes and that causes Hijo de Tirantes to get down from the cage. Pimpi then climbs out. Final 3 are Hernandez and Chessman going against Heavy Metal. Hernandez with a Razor’s Edge sends Heavy Metal crashing into the cage. Hernandez climbs to the very top of the cage and does a plancha on Heavy Metal. Pretty fucking awesome. Fans popped for that. Both rudos decide to climb out of the cage. Hernandez gets out, but Chessman gets met at the top by Piero, who knocks down Chessman. Crowd now into the match. Chessman decides to do a moonsault off the top of the cage, but Heavy Metal moves. Heavy Metal tries to escape, but Hijo de Tirantes whacks him with a chair and sends Heavy crashing down from the cage. Chessman jumps out easily for the win. Heavy Metal wants to get his head shaved due to feeling that he let down Piero, which of course no one bought for a second. Piero gets his head shaved. Hijo de Tirantes is still there, so Piero grabs a chair and hits him over the head with it.

Hernandez and Pimpinela really made this match. Early portion of the match was boring, but it picks up later.

Konnan said the first thing he would do if he were Joaquin Roldan was fire Heavy Metal for being a “pendejo”. I laughed for some reason.

5. Jack Evans b Nosawa, Christopher Daniels, Extreme Tiger [AAA CRUISER]

Another video package for these guys. It starts with El Generico telling Jack Evans that without a title, he isn’t the best cruiserweight. They air the Extreme Tiger and Jack Evans sit-down interview with Arturo Rivera. They use youtube video quality footage for Nosawa and TNA footage for Christopher Daniels.

Jack Evans is crazy over in Mexico. Its the break-dancing! Rest of the guys in the match didn’t get the same reaction that Jack did. AAA has a habit of over-hyping cruiserweight matches as if they’re match of the year worthy. Almost like they want to force the fans into liking certain matches. Strangely enough, they didn’t hype this match at the level of some of their previous multi-person cruiserweight title matches. Usually all these match feature a lot of chairs, tables, and ladders. This one however didn’t have any of the plunder in it.

Crowd seemed a little dead at certain points in this match. They cheered loudly for anything Jack Evans did and for highspots he and Extreme Tiger would do during the match. I think the fans were expecting weapons and furniture and got none, which I thought made the match better as it progressed. Daniels bled early in the match. Nosawa stuck mostly to brawling and being a base for all of Evans and Extreme Tiger’s spots. Daniels was very good in the match. He kept Extreme Tiger from botching anything. Nosawa was the first to be eliminated after being hit with a legdrop by Extreme Tiger. Extreme Tiger was then eliminated when El Relampago (wearing an Extreme Tiger mask) distracted Extreme Tiger and Christopher Daniels slipped in and rolled up Tiger for the pin.

Evans and Daniels then worked a regular wrestling match. How about that? Solid finish to the match. Jack Evans pins Christopher Daniels with a reverse 450-splash that I’m sure has a different name to what I just called it.:) Evans celebrates winning the title by carrying a Mexican flag and a little stuff animal. He goes and hugs the fans and made winning come across like a big deal. I liked that. Good seeing a cruiserweight match without weapons and bullshit added.

Konnan on announcing was very good early in the match letting everyone know a little about everyone. Recent Figure-4 Daily appearance, Konnan couldn’t remember if he teamed with Super Crazy or was around when Super Crazy started in AAA (he was), but yet knew about Nosawa’s early style in wrestling. Could have been bullshitting, which I’m sure he was. He made sure to get over every guy. Then he goes on a wacky rant about CMLL and Marco Corleone. The CMLL stuff confused Arturo Rivera, who really didn’t have much to add to the discussion.

6. Abyss & Cibernético b Vampiro & Zorro

They started off with the video package, which I liked since I’m sure there are some fans who might have missed a show or two. During the intros, they made a video fro Cibernetico, which looked like the scene with the villian from Iron Man 2.

This match was pretty boring. It was moreso built to lead to the Konnan-Vampiro feud. They teased dissension between Konnan and Vampiro throughout and had a few confrontations between the two. Match didn’t go very long as the Foreign Legion ran-in immediately. They attacked Abyss, but left Cibernetico alone since he was down. Cibernetico got up and cleaned house on the Foreign Legion. Konnan gets out of his announcer’s seat and heads over to the ring and yells at Vampiro. Follows that up with a shove. Konnan then throws powder at Vampiro and Cibernetico chokeslams him for the pin. Foreign Legion all attack again, but La Hermandad 187 come out and destroy Alex Koslov.

La Hermandad 187 start yelling at Konnan. Konnan with the zingers during this show. He asks if that’s suppose to be a dead cow around Nicho when referring to his pants and then says he can’t take Nicho seriously while he’s wearing those pants. Outside of the wacky bashing of the competition, Konnan’s been really good as an announcer on this PPV. Andres Maronas tries to talk Konnan into turning tecnico by saying he knows him and he’s a good guy. Pretty funny.

triplemaniaXVIII04

7. Dr. Wagner Jr. b Electroshock [AAA HEAVY]

Ten-minute video package. I had to fast forward through about the last 5 minutes of it because it just wouldn’t end. I did get a kick out of the clips with a little kid watching and crying when Electroshock and Silver Kain turn on Dr. Wagner Jr.

They shake hands to start the match. This match was worked to be a traditional championship match, which this crowd didn’t seem to in to. The announcers and Konnan mentioned how this is the type of match die-hard fans would like and its the essence of lucha libre. Really this was the wrong crowd for this match. Match was clean throughout. They tried to do a lot of counter-moves throughout and at some points it just didn’t seem to work. Crowd wasn’t into it. I thought it was a pretty good match save for a weird spot were they rolled around for awhile trying to get pinfalls on each other. Dr. Wagner Jr. got the win after hitting an enzuigiri followed by the Wagner Driver for the win.

El Mesias comes out and hands Dr. Wagner Jr. the AAA Mega Heavyweight Title and congratulates him. Electroshock shakes Dr. Wagner Jr’s hand and then bows down to him.

8. LA Park b La Parka (AAA) [identity]

Well apparently those video packages might have been taken from the AAA TV show previewing Triplemania and placed on the dvds by the person that sent me the dvds because he put in a 3ra Caida segment and it had no audio. TIP #1: When authoring a DVD always check that it works. Never assume that the software is going to work 100% of the time because it doesn’t. You might get compatibility issues or audio issues. (NOTE: I fix that sort of stuff all the time.) Well, I fast forward through the mime segment.

laparkaaaa02L.A. Park cuts a great promo about this match. L.A. Park is seconded by Dorian Roldan and carries a chair with his likeness on it. La Parka cuts a promo prior to coming out to the ring and tells us that everyone who doubted him will be proven wrong tonight because that name and likeness is his. Joaquin Roldan walks out first. Both guys enter to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.

Match was a bloody brawl. Crowd was hot for this match throughout. It pretty much showed that this event was a one-match event since this match had heat from start to finish, whereas all the previous matches had moments were the crowd was quiet. Fans were in favor of L.A. Park for most of the match and really sided with him completely late in the match. L.A. Park dominated the early portion of the match. La Parka bled very early. They used chairs and tables in the match. They brawled in the crowd a few times as well. Both guys did tope suicidas to the outside as well. La Parka’s hit L.A. Park, but you could see he was pretty worn out at this point. L.A. Park’s tope attempt on La Parka resulted in him knocking out referee, Copetes Salazar. Joaquin and Dorian Roldan were on the outside throughout the match. Dorian handed a chair to L.A. Park to finish off La Parka, but Joaquin got involved and pleaded with L.A. Park to stop. L.A. Park raised the chair up in order to strike Joaquin, but Dorian grabbed it to defend his father. L.A. Park then knocked down Dorian and then hit Joaquin with the chair. Fans start throwing trash at L.A. Park. L.A. Park does a strut and Dorian just walks by him and hits him with a chair and proceeds to kick him. Dorian heads over to see if his dad’s okay and at that moment Damian 666 and Halloween run out and drag L.A. Park over La Parka for the pin. Hijo de Tirantes counts the win. The rest of Los Perros Del Mal come out to celebrate L.A. Park’s victory.

Konnan starts naming all the Perros Del Mal who are in the ring and notices some big guy and says he has no idea who that ‘guey’ is. LOL! Later on, Andres Maronas suggests it could be Rayo De Jalisco Jr. which gets kind of funny. Then one of the announcers ask who’s the skinny looking La Parka (Hijo de L.A. Park).

Hijo de Perro Aguayo makes his way to the ring coming out from a limo. AAA wrestlers come out and Konnan says that they sent out all the women and starts naming them, “El Elegido, Cinthia, Jack, etc.”! L.A. Park tells Dorian and Konnan that he arrived thanks to their help, but he knew that he couldn’t trust them, so he told Hijo de Perro that if he got into any type of trouble he’d call for him. L.A. Park then tells them to go “chingan sus madres” (go fuck your mothers). Konnan mentions that he had nothing to do with Dorian’s decision.

Show ends with Marisela Pena thanking the fans and getting everyone to cheer on AAA. There were a lot of fans booing AAA.

Almost forgot, there was a concert by the band El Tri. That dude cursed like a motherfucker. shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit! (do your best Clay Davis impersonation when saying that!) He sang a song dedicated to lucha libre.

Pretty good show overall. I do have to say that I spent time mentioning all those video packages thinking AAA put them in the PPV, but it wasn’t until I saw the last one with the audio problem that I realized that the person sending in the dvds had added that stuff. I thought it was a nice touch to the PPV. Too bad the last one didn’t work, which now means I gotta fix that.

From a match standpoint, I thought the main was a strong finish to the show. I get the feeling the people who hated the rest of the show were there to see gimmick or hardcore matches and were confused to see a Cruiserweight match without weapons and a title match worked in a technical style. I liked those matches. Women’s match wasn’t bad since it was kept short. The 4-way tag and the tag match were probably the weakest matches on the show. Cage match had a memorable Hernandez plancha off the top of the cage. The main event lived up to the hype and it probably positioned L.A. Park for wrestler of the year for 2010.

CMLL COUNTER’S AAA WITH “SIN SALIDA”!

CMLL held a show that started earlier than Triplemania on the same day. They didn’t really stack the lineup as the only match of interest was the relevos increibles match featuring Mascara Dorada/Mistico/Mr. Aguila going against Volador Jr./Averno/Negro Casas. The main focus of the show was the CMLL vs. Invasores storyline. As the show drew closer, CMLL decided to add a hair match between Maximo and Taichi. The moment Taichi was announced as heading to CMLL by New Japan, you just figured it was only a matter of time before he would have a hair match and eventually lose. Maximo is a passable mid-carder, but isn’t main event material for a big event. That hair match would have been acceptable as the semi-main event or maybe even a main event on a smaller show. It also didn’t help that the semi-main event featured old-timers. They should have reshuffled this lineup with more attention placed on the Relevos Increibles match as the main event, followed by the hair match and then as a special attraction match the Giant Bernard vs. Strongman confrontation in a trios match.

dorada_aguila_misticoEMLL 6/6 – Arena Mexico (Sin Salida)
1. Demus 3:16 & Pierrothito beat Bam Bam & Shockercito with Demus sending Shockercito out on a stretcher.

2. Metro/Rush/Stuka Jr. defeated Histeria/Maniaco/Monsther

3. Hijo del Fantasma/La Mascara/Shocker beat Alebrije/Olimpico/Psicosis by DQ when Hector Garza interfered and the invaders destroyed the tecnicos afterward.

4. Relevos Increibles: Mascara Dorada/Mistico/Mr. Aguila defeated Volador Jr./Averno/Negro Casas by DQ. Averno came out wearing his combo mask with Mistico and offered one to Mistico who denied him so he pulled off his mask to reveal an Averno/Volador combo mask with Volador doing the same meaning Volador is now a rudo. Tirantes caught Volador tossing his mask to Mistico in the 3rd fall to get the DQ and then the Mistico/Volador mask challenges restarted.

5. Gigante Bernard/Mascara Ano Dos Mil/Universo Dos Mil beat Brazo de Plata/Rayo de Jalisco Jr./”Strongman” Jon Anderson with Bernard injuring Strongman’s arm and he had to be stretchered out also.

6. Caballera contra Caballera: Maximo defeated Taichi Ishikari who got all of his hair shaved including the extensions.

2010: THE YEAR OF THE INVASION

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. While its entirely possible that everyone who writes or books a pro wrestling promotion may or may not watch other wrestling shows except their own, the year 2010 will probably be remembered for four and maybe five promotions doing an invasion storyline. I say five because I heard TNA is doing some sort of ex-ECW invasion angle, but I wouldn’t know as I don’t watch their shows at all. One of the perks of doing this site for fun and not for money is that I don’t have to watch everything and TNA falls into that category. Let’s focus on the four invasion angles that have progressed in the past several weeks.

cuije vs kemonitoCMLL vs. Invasores: When it first started, I thought this was going to be a great storyline for CMLL. Something completely out of left field for a promotion that’s called “serie y estable” (serious & stable). Have an invasion of wrestlers who are viewed by CMLL’s fanbase in a negative light and would generally get booed by everyone. The Invasores group should have been built around 6-7 wrestlers that were preferably ex-AAA guys. They started off with El Alebrije w/ Cuije, Monsther w/ Chuky, and the Vipers (Psicosis, Histeria and Maniaco). With the possible exception of Monsther, the rest of that faction is actually a pretty passable group of wrestlers. CMLL immediately noticed that the group lacked one major piece and that was a main event leader. They tried talking L.A. Park into joining the group, but he turned them down. Mr. Aguila ended up returning and he filled the second or third man role for this group, but they still needed a star to lead the group. While this angle was going on, Hector Garza had begun turning from tecnico to rudo. The storyline for Garza’s turn was basically his belief that Super Porky (Brazo de Plata) should shed a few pounds to lead a healthy life. What better way to get Super Porky to lose weight than by Garza humiliating him as much as possible. People began to question Garza’s ways and he played up his “innocent” persona saying he only wanted what was best for Super Porky. He eventually turned by helping the Invasores and aligning himself with them.

Garza and Mr. Aguila fit the group perfectly given that they do have a past as part of AAA’s roster. Mr. Aguila has the credibility with the die-hard lucha fans from his time as part of the Perros Del Mal faction as well. Garza does too, but since he stuck with CMLL, he’s more of a traitor than an invader. With these two to go along with Alebrije, Cuije, Monsther, Chuky and Los Ex-Vipers, you have a group that you could probably run with for about 4-5 months. Seven members to go with 2 mascots is a perfectly acceptable number.

Where this angle lost me was when they added Los Dinamitas and Olimpico to this group. Los Dinamitas don’t come across as invaders given that they wrestled for decades in CMLL. Olimpico had just left last year and spent most of his time out of CMLL telling everyone that he wished he could return to CMLL. How many invaders kiss the ring during an invasion?

charlymanson

If they wanted to increase the Invasores numbers, they should at the very least stick to guys who are thought of as “AAA Stars”. How about Charly Manson? His last year in AAA, he looked completely broken down. I felt it was a combination of injuries amassed over the years and being burned out on AAA. When Charly’s putting in 100% effort, he can still pull out a decent match. Not a great worker, but certainly not a stiff in the ring. He’d be a guy who’s hair would have some value for a stip match in CMLL. He’s probably the only guy not in AAA or CMLL who would fit this storyline.

Latin Lover wouldn’t be a bad addition either. Of course, they had Garza attack him already. Latin would be a solid choice given how he wouldn’t be wrestling every week and fans wouldn’t burn-out watching him 2-3 times a week. Instead, he’d be in for a few shows, the bigger events and then be gone to do his TV stuff. Then there’s the celebrity part of Latin Lover. What better way to attract new fans than by having Latin Lover bring up that he’s going to be at one of these shows? I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime during the year they do something with Latin Lover vs. Hector Garza.

As far as how have the ex-AAA guys performed in CMLL, well Psicosis has done an admirable job both in the ring and on interviews. AAA wrestlers for the past 10 years have been labeled by fans, the media, certain wrestlers as being unable to wrestle. The thing is in AAA, the “wrestling” portion of the show is secondary to the storylines. Take Los Ex-Vipers matches in AAA. All of their matches usually involved a giant clusterfuck before, during or after that I’m sure the focus was made to that moment more than the actual match itself. People tend to forget that years ago when Hijo del Perro Aguayo first jumped to CMLL there were a few people who actually didn’t think he was that good given he was in AAA. These were the days when the only thing people wanted to talk about is “when Rey Misterio Jr. will be on TV” and “whatever happened to Super Calo”. Speaking of Super Calo, he’d be another guy who would be great in this storyline.

El Oriental and Tirantes also joined the Invasores side. I like both additions. El Oriental is a good worker most of the time. Funny how it took him 10 years, joining AAA, working mid-card in AAA, leaving AAA right when he was getting a decent push with the Yakuza trio, becoming an independent and finally he gets to headline for CMLL in this invasion storyline. Tirantes is actually very good on the mic and would be a solid addition just as a mouthpiece for this group. Throw him in to ref a match every so often. The problem with Tirantes is that lucha libre promoters/bookers have a habit of overusing heel refs and I expect that to happen here with Tirantes.

Alebrije with Cuije could work against a CMLL wrestler and Que Monito type of angle. Maybe have Que Monito recruit different wrestlers in his war with Alebrije and Cuije. Maximo, Shocker, and eventually Mr. Niebla would work for a 6-month run. Maximo w/Que Monito vs. Alebrije w/ Cuije headlining in Guadalajara. Followed by Shocker w/ Que Monito vs. Alebrije w/ Cuije in a hair vs. mask match at the year-end show. Then at Dos Leyendas a special attraction match between Mr. Niebla /w Que Monito vs. Alebrije w/ Cuije.

Monsther with Chuky could be used as stepping stones for Que Monito in his war with Cuije. That would be a lower card feud. Two feuds built around Que Monito! Beats watching 9 minutes of commercials.

The Ex-Vipers could feud with all the top CMLL trios. Start them off against one of the trios champions. Start them off against the Mexican National Trios Champions, Máscara Dorada, Metro, Stuka Jr. Throw in a feud with Poder Mexica. Maybe a feud with Los Hijos del Averno. Guerreros del Atlantida. The CMLL Trios Champions La Sombra, Máscara Dorada & La Máscara. There’s a lot to choose from.

How about a torneo cibernetico? CMLL vs. Invasores 7 vs. 7. There’s quite a number of matches you could get out of this storyline even before getting to all the stip matches that seem to go by way too quickly nowadays.

WWE vs. NXT: Of all the recent invasions, this one had the best beginning to it. Granted it lacked a mini attacking Michael Cole, but I’ll give WWE a pass on that. There’s two ways that I like an invasion starting a grandstand challenge in the opposition’s ring (think UWF wrestlers showing up in suits challenging New Japan stars prior to their match and Scott Hall’s surprise walk-in during a match on WCW Monday Nitro) or just showing up and beating the crap out of someone. The NXT wrestlers not only focused on destroying WWE’s top star John Cena, but they handed out beatdowns to anyone working for WWE ringside that didn’t run away. They attacked Cena, Punk, Lawler, Gallows, ring announcer Justin Roberts (more on him later), the crew seated ringside, the refs. Everybody. Then they just destroyed everything from the ring to the announce table. The fans at this show looked completely shocked at what happened. With all the information nowadays at your fingertips, it was refreshing to see something come out of nowhere.

Of course, the pessimistic wrestling fan in me immediately thought, “I wonder how they’ll screw this up!” and well I had a feeling during that attack that something I saw would get some negative feedback. The Daniel Bryan (a.k.a. Bryan Danielson) was choking out Justin Roberts with his tie and the way he reacted for the camera it looked a bit over the top. Just felt he was overacting and it would comeback to haunt someone. Then there was the spitting at Cena by Daniel Bryan. That looked disgusting. It worked for the angle. WWE then fires Daniel Bryan, which had some people thinking it was a work, but it turned out that they did fire him. Really kills the NXT group because other than Bryan and Wade Barrett, I have no real interest in the other guys.

I wouldn’t be shocked that come Summerslam that WWE will bring back Daniel Bryan and he ends up helping Barrett win a title. That’s what I get the feeling they’ll do. I think there might be a Pillman-type of appearance were he just randomly shows up at a Raw and attacks someone.

I’m not totally invested in this storyline given that I sometimes skip watching WWE since I have the fortune of always tuning in when the Divas wrestle and that usually just ends up with me switching to another channel.

However, this angle for one night at least had me back watching WWE. I even tuned in to the follow-up show. The good thing about technology is I can catch anything I miss on youtube.

Perro_aguayo_jr_AAA vs. Los Perros Del Mal: This one started off the worst way possible, but might actually have the best potential of any invasion angle for the simple reason that both sides have strong main eventers. On the PdM side, you have two of the most charismatic wrestlers around in L.A. Park and El Hijo del Perro Aguayo. On AAA’s side, you have yet another charismatic wrestler in Dr. Wagner Jr., but you also have a nice mix of guys to feud with Perros del Mal like La Parka (there will be a revancha at some point), El Mesias, Jack Evans (if they ever got past the size issue), Cibernetico, and El Zorro.

As I said earlier, the way this started out was Los Perros Del Mal and AAA announced through various forms of media that Los Perros del Mal would be at Triplemania. Then Los Perros Del Mal held a press conference to confirm that they would be at Triplemania, but mentioned it wouldn’t be an invasion. You know how people like to compare games, boxing fights, and wrestling matches to wars, well this would be like the President of the US letting a country know that the US was going to attack it and give them the coordinates of where we would attack and then side-step the issue by saying it wasn’t an attack and came up with some new term for ‘attack’ that wouldn’t jive with people. This is what it felt like with Los Perros del Mal…”Oh we’ll be there, but it won’t be an invasion!”…They show up at Triplemania help L.A. Park win. Have a run-in and then Hijo del Perro Aguayo challenges AAA, but its not an invasion! ;)

They’ve since had Los Perros del Mal align themselves with the Foreign Legion, which probably kills part of the whole invasion angle since it just becomes an extension of the Konnan vs. Joaquin Roldan storyline of the past 3 years. However, with their being a dwindling number of wrestlers to choose from to join Los Perros del Mal, it probably had to happen. Guys like Marco Corleone, El Hijo del Santo, Charly Manson and probably even Blue Demon Jr. won’t be joining in on this storyline at the moment or quite possible at any point, so there really are only 4-5 guys on the PdM side of things. When El Mosco is your 5-6 guy, you know your a little weak. Not that El Mosco is a bad wrestler, he’s actually good, but I don’t think people would see him as a main event guy. Rest of the group were undercard guys.

Its still to early too figure out this storyline, but I do think this one will captivate fans more than the other invasions due to L.A. Park and Hijo del Perro Aguayo being on television on a more regular basis.

AAA vs. IWRG: This one started late in April with Silver King showing up and issuing a challenge and interfering in the main event for the Mexico State Trios Titles between Los Guapos VIP and La Dinasita Dinamita. It soon led to more AAA wrestlers make their way to Arena Naucalpan. Silver King, Electroshock, Ultimo Gladiador, The Black Family, Aerostar, and Gato Eveready were just some of the names showing up. Like I said last month, it felt like the place were all the Mexican AAA wrestlers would get booked. There’s been other guys like Kenzo Suzuki and Alex Koslov appearing in Naucalpan, so it should be viewed more as an additional booking gig for these guys.

So far there’s been some fun-looking match-ups.  Thankfully, Black Terry Jr. films some of these matches otherwise we would never see them.  La Secta vs. Los Oficiales would be a fun feud to run over the summer.

The Junior Dinamitas showed up at Triplemania to set-up a possible IWRG vs. AAA match-up at a AAA show, but I get the feeling that was more to build a AAA tag team title match at Arena Naucalpan given that AAA seems more focused on the Perros Del Mal invasion.

Scorpio Sr. Passes Away (1942 – 2010)

scorpiosrScorpio aka Rafael Nunez who is the father of Scorpio Jr. and was one of the most famous luchadors in Mexico & Southern California in the 70’s & 80’s died this morning at the age of 67. Scorpio who had the gimmick of being “El Rey Feo” or the ugliest man in the world was one of the few men to actually defeat Canek clean in the ring for the UWA Heavyweight Title on 4/30/85 before losing it back to him on 6/30/85 and was known to be one of the toughest guys in lucha libre being the policeman for the UWA office. Scorp actually made his debut in the United States working in San Antonio on 5/3/68 but he would gain fame working for the UWA where he feuded with all the top stars of the promotion before losing his mask in a tag match with El Condor against Los Villanos I y II on 12/3/75 in Mexico City. Scorp would then take on the “El Rey Feo” gimmick around Mexico & Southern California where he would lose his hair on an almost yearly basis to top stars like Enrique Vera, Perro Aguayo, Dos Caras, Ringo Mendoza, Black Scorpio (2 Cold Scorpio), El Texano, Silver King, & Canek. Scorp would eventually retire in the late 90’s taking a position as being a notable member of the Distrito Federal Box y Lucha Commission where he would be seen ringside almost weekly at Arena Mexico and getting involved with angles at times.

ODDS & ENDS!

Teleformula has aired the same IWRG show for about 7 consecutive weeks! This reminds me of the time back in the early ’90s when Sportschannel made its way for about a month on TV and they replayed the same wrestling show for that entire month. Except that was only 1 month and I was shocked to see Sportschannel.

I reviewed the Viva La Lucha PPV from June and if you haven’t read it be sure to do so.

Masked Warriors should be starting at some point. The reports from various people have been pretty underwhelming. The lineups haven’t been very impressive. Part of the problem seems to be timing given all these invasions seem to be taking guys out of the mix on a fairly regular basis. I assume at some point there will be more luchadores available for these shows, so hopefully the roster should continue to improve.

La Sombra’s run in the New Japan Best of The Super Junior Tournament was received with mixed emotions by fans. Some felt him losing so often made him look mid-card and really reflected poorly in this current New Japan-CMLL relationship were CMLL headlines shows with the New Japan wrestlers, while New Japan uses the CMLL wrestlers as mid-card fodder. The way New Japan has used luchadores has been about the same for years, so it shouldn’t really surprise anyone. There’s always that one rare guy like Negro Casas or Dr. Wagner Jr., but most guys just show up and get placed in tournaments to lose or regular matches to lose. I felt La Sombra did very well and I was actually surprised he looked as good as he did in so many singles matches against guys he’s not familiar with.

Finally….

In case you missed it or want to rewatch it again, here’s L.A. Park knocking out some drunk guy! I watched it about 100 times already!
