RECAP: CMLL on terra.com 8/12/12

3

CMLL’s latest online show on terra.com had some hiccups, but at least the entire show aired for free and what a finish this show had. If you missed it, you “might” have missed La Sombra vs. Averno in a Match Of The Year worthy candidate. I write “might” because the match should air on 52MX next week, so those of you who missed it better hope that someone records it and posts it on youtube. So keep your fingers crossed and hope there is no power outage anywhere near Illinois!

This week’s Sunday show was from Arena Coliseo. There were some earlier problems were the announcers or whoever is in charge of pressing the button or clicking the on switch to get the audio to work was asleep at the wheel. There was no audio during the first match. The feed was also kinda choppy throughout.

1. Bengala & Leono b Camorra & Cholo

Not much to this match and this was were the announcers could have been used because we certainly need JCR to let us know that Leono is “nervous” after a botch spot.

2. Camaleón, Pegasso, Sensei b Artillero, Herodes Jr., Súper Comando

This match featured the debut of Herodes Jr. His father, Herodes, joined the announce team talking about his son’s debut and his as well and some of his memories. As far as Jr. did in the ring, I thought he did well. He started off well, then seemed to get a bit nervous in the second, but did a little playing to the crowd to get back into the match. Slightly disappointed he’s not a stocky brute like his old man, but he’s got more of a tall (might not be too tall since his partners and opponents are pretty small guys), lanky build to him. He showed some good rudo charisma during the match. He had the right partners to work with. Tecnicos were good.

Good second match.

3. Dalis la Caribeña, Lady Afrodita, Marcela b La Seductora, Tiffany, Zeuxis

I could write that Tiffany tripping as she walked thru the entrance was the highlight of the match, but it wasn’t. Match had its moments. When Marcela was on offense this match was good. Tiffany had a cap on her head for much of the match. At the end of the match, Marcela took it off to the delight of the fans.

4. Stuka Jr. COR Namajague [lightning]

Short lightning match as it only went a little over 4 minutes. It appears they are going to have these two feud for a bit. The announcers mentioned that maybe on an upcoming Arena Coliseo show Namajague and Okumura could challenge for the Arena Coliseo Tag Titles held by Stuka Jr. and Fuego. Namajague hit a nice dive to the outside. I should also mention Namajague’s added hair to the mask was pretty great. Namajague used some sort of belt/rope to whip Stuka Jr. a bit until the ref took the illegal object away. Stuka Jr. hit his dive and the ref started the count. Stuka Jr. got in without any problems. Namajague was selling the dive and added an extra bit of selling when he “slipped” and hit the ring. The ref was at about 17 at that time, but that extra bit of selling by Namajague screwed up the count, so the ref counted out Namajague. Seemed like that wasn’t the planned finish. Stuka Jr. was the winner, but didn’t seem too pleased with how he got the win, so he went and beat on Namajague a bit more.

5. Hijo del Fantasma, Marco Corleone, Super Porky b Rey Escorpión, Terrible, Tiger

Super Porky did his usual comedy bits from the moment he walked down the entrance and danced with the ring girls. He got slapped by Rey Escorpion a couple of times walked over to his corner and Hijo del Fantasma and Marco Corleone slapped him to get him going. Super Porky and Rey Escorpion opened with sumo spots! There were A LOT of women in attendance so Marco Corleone was very over on this show. Match was okay and the crowd was really into it. Announcers mentioned Rey Escorpion is still in the Guerreros group despite disagreeing with Ultimo Guerrero all the time.

Funny moment was Marco Corleone getting sent to the outside and falling on one of the women ringside and a group of the women there wouldn’t let him go and tried to keep El Terrible away.

I should also mention there was an older woman at this show and the announcers brought up that she’s the new Doña Vicky. CMLL cloning fans too! :)

6. La Sombra b Averno

WOW! If you missed this match you missed what was probably a Match Of The Year in Mexico. Its funny because on the recent LuchaWorld podcast we were pointing out that La Sombra and Averno have rarely been on CMLL’s show on Galavision. There’s several other shows, so if you are like me, then you’ll find or search out those matches on youtube. However, you’d be surprised how many people don’t do that and think guys are missing.

Match got going right away with Averno attacking La Sombra during his entrance. Averno ripped La Sombra’s pants and even hit a devil’s wings on the outside. He hit another devil’s wings on La Sombra in the ring to take the first fall. La Sombra took the second fall with his Brillante Bomb. He hit one of his cool dives to the outside. La Sombra is a freak athletically. This crowd had far more tecnico fans so they drowned out the rudo fans for one night. Third fall was fantastic. They had a ton of near falls. La Sombra’s athleticism was showcased. Averno played to the crowd. This is the kind of match that I’m sure most people watching probably would have paid to see. La Sombra hit a dive off the top rope on an opposing side of the ring that was very impressive. For one thing he did it with ease and the other was they didn’t hit anyone ringside…well, except that dude carrying a box. La Sombra attempted a top rope headscissors, but seemed to slip off and took Averno down with him. Averno held his face. Looked like he was selling to cover up for the mistake. They kept going for a few minutes more until La Sombra used an elevated German Suplex for the win.

After the match La Sombra issued Averno a mask vs. hair match challenge and Averno accepted. I guess you can either add a possible singles match of theirs to the mix of possible Anniversary match main events OR just assume they’ll be part of the multi-person cage match.

Just a fantastic match. For all the negatives most of us point out about CMLL and there are plenty, its still pretty amazing that they are the promotion in Mexico that has an online show. The terra.com show has had its hits and misses, but this show was probably their biggest hit and the #1 reason to hope they continue streaming this show.

  1. Hooks Malone says:

I disagree that CMLL has many flaws. I feel that in comparison to the majority of other lucha/wrestling shows, CMLL’s matches and talent are just above and beyond what other shows are presenting. Most companies play off of awful storylines and tend to throw matches together based on gimmicks and not athletics. The only problem I’ve ever thought CMLL to have is the lack of hype around champions and championship matches. They would be much better off with simply a world champion, trios champions, champion of mexico, ladies, and minis titles. I follow CMLL as my favorite lucha show, but never know who the champions are due to too many divisions and titles. Aside from that (and maybe less airtime to the ladies) CMLL is the closest thing I will ever find to my perfect lucha libre or wrestling show. Now if all the best talent would just subscribe to my philosophy and jusst jump ship. I’ll trade in Marco Corleone for L.A. Park anyday.
