2011 LuchaWorld 100 Countdown: #4. Virus
4. Virus – (17) – (5’5″, 174 lbs, 26 yr. pro): Based solely on number of quality matches, Virus might have had the best year in lucha libre for 2011. His body of work in the ring was pretty amazing. He’s never gonna be the top guy because at best he’s a semi-main event guy, who usually ends up in third matches on big shows. Last year with CMLL just pushing and de-pushing everyone, Virus had an amazing year. Its a lock that Virus will always have a good spot in CMLL. He might not be a main event guy, but his value to the promotion is probably far more important than casual fans could imagine. For the young CMLL tecnicos he’s the middle veteran rudo they must go through to reach main event or semi-main event status. In the last couple of years, CMLL has given him a better push and he’s become the leader of one of CMLL’s rudo factions, Los Cancerberos. In early 2011, had a feud with Demus 3:16, who had followed a similar path that Virus had taken previously from going from being in the minis division to the regular-size male roster. This did not sit well with Virus and this eventually led to the two setting up one of the great stipulation matches of all-time. Virus and Demus 3:16 agreed to a hair match. Virus then felt that Demus 3:16 should he lose, should return to the minis division. Demus 3:16 accepted, but suggested that if he won, Virus would lose leadership of Los Cancerberos and Demus would become the new leader. They agreed on all stipulations. On March 11th, Virus beat Demus 3:16 in the hair match at Arena Mexico sending his rival back to the minis division. Virus won the vacant CMLL World Super Lightweight title on June 8th in an excellent match over Guerrero Maya Jr. Had successful title defenses against Stuka Jr. and Dragon Lee. Teamed frequently with other members of Los Cancerberos in trios matches. The faction had a brief rudo vs. rudo feud with the Guerreros Tuareg.
