2011 LuchaWorld 100 Countdown: #9. La Sombra

9. La Sombra (1) – (5’10″, 175 lbs, 8 yr. pro): Last year’s #1 ranked luchador in the LuchaWorld 100 had yet another strong year in 2011. Made several trips to Japan for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Wrestled at the 1/4 Tokyo Dome show were he teamed with Mascara Dorada to defeat Jushin “Thunder” Liger and Hector Garza. Lost to Jushin “Thunder” Liger at the 1/22 New Japan/CMLL Fantasticmania show. He made another trip to Japan to take part in the annual August G1 Climax tournament for New Japan. He won two matches over Wataru Inoue and Strongman and lost the rest, which is the norm for most luchadores invited to take part in tournaments in Japan. In Mexico, La Sombra continued to feud with Los Hijos del Averno with teammates Mascara Dorada and La Mascara (known as Generacion Dorada). On March 13th, he defeated Mephisto for the NWA World Historic Welterweight title. He went on to have successful title defenses against Psicosis II and former tag team partner/turned rival, Volador Jr. On April 24th, La Sombra won the Lucha Libre Azteca title in a 3-way match involving Atlantis and Volador Jr. in Nuevo Leon. He later in the year lost it to Volador Jr. in another 3-way match. Generacion Dorada lost the CMLL World Trios titles to Los Hijos del Averno on July 15th at Arena Mexico in an excellent match. La Sombra won the Universal title on September 16th in the final against Averno in yet another excellent match.
