2011 LuchaWorld 100 Countdown: #45. Rey Bucanero

45. Rey Bucanero – (63) – (5’10″, 207 lbs, 20 yr. pro): A very busy year for Rey Bucanero. Not only was he very active in the ring, he continued to do some announcing on CMLL TV shows. Most notably and regularly the show on CadenaTres. Started 2011 as part of La Peste Negra. In April, he left that group to form a new trio with Texano Jr. and El Terrible known as Fuerza TRT. Zacarias El Perico went along with the new trio, but during an episode of Ras De Lona, Rey Bucanero kicked him, beat him and told Zacarias he wasn’t part of this team. Heartbroken, Zacarias returned to La Peste Negra were he would experience a new wave of popularity (more on that later!). Rey Bucanero challenged Rush for the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Title, but could not get the win. Rey Bucanero would bounce back nicely by winning the vacant NWA World Historic Light Heavyweight Title in a match against El Hijo del Fantasma were he was tope’d not once, not twice, but three times consecutively in the third fall and still came out victorious. Bucanero made appearances outside of Mexico as well in 2011 for prominent US indie promotions. In January he appeared on the PWG show held during late January’s WrestleReunion convention in Los Angeles. He and Atlantis also appeared on a Chikara show during the summer. During the late summer, Rey Bucanero was part of the cast of a lucha reality-based series airing on A&E Mexico called “El Luchador”. The build-up to the conclusion of the show’s finale was going to coincide with the September anniversary show for CMLL which looked like it was going to be geared towards a singles hair match pitting Rey Bucanero vs. Felino. The two had been feuding leading up to that show, but CMLL ended up turning it into a multi-person cage match. Rey Bucanero lost the cage match and had his head shaved. The feud with Felino continued as Rey Bucanero turned Felino’s son, Tiger on him and when Texano Jr. left CMLL in late November, Tiger was added to the trio.
