VIDEO: 10-Man Tag Match featuring Tortuguillos Karatekas!
One of the great cartoon gimmicks that made its way into lucha libre in the early ’90s came from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. So popular that there were two sets of teams using the gimmick. In CMLL, they were known as Las Torgujas Ninjas and used the names of the cartoon characters to differentiate each member. In the UWA promotion they were called Los Tortuguillos Karatekas and used numbers to tell each member apart. What both groups shared in common was that they were pretty popular with the kids and they were pretty talented in the ring. There were other turtles including one called Kowabunga that made his way into Memphis.
This video is from the Tortuguillos Karatekas tour of Japan for Hamada’s UWF back in 1991. They team up with a member of the Alvarado family (Los Brazos) known as Robin Hood. Their opponents consist of four members of Los Temerarios (Black Terry, Shu El Guerrero, Jose Luis Feliciano, & Lobo Rubio) teaming with Ricky Boy. Its a fun 2 out of 3 falls match. Watch it.
For those wondering, here’s Kowabunga channel surfing and marking out to Jerry “The King” Lawler…
